Primarily Need Based Colleges and Univerities Very limited merit awards

The listed colleges should be used for families who qualify for need based aid, and have high achieving students.  If the family does not qualify for need based aid, these colleges are most likely 'full price'. Most of listed colleges meet 100% of need.

Need based aid를 이해하기 위해서는 COA와 EFC에 대한 이해가 필요하다.

COA(Cost Of Attendance)는, 한 학생이 그 학교를 일년간 다니는 데에 소요되는 비용이다. 등록금(Tuition)만이 아니라, Book & Supplies, Room & Board, Living Expense등 학생에 관련된 모든 비용을 포함하는 개념이다. 
각 대학에서는 자기 학교를 다니는 데에 드는 비용을 계산을 하여 매년 이를 발표한다. 

EFC (Expected Family Contribution)은 학생이 대학을 다니는 동안 해당 가정에서 부담하는 비용이다. 이는 각 Family의 경제 사정에 따라 얼마를 부담할 수 있는 지가 결정이 된다. 이 EFC를 결정하는 주요 항목은 아래와 같다. 

- Parents’ Income 
- Parents’ assets (cash, savings, home equity, other real estate and investments) 
- Size of Family 
- Number of children attending college 
- Student’s income 
- Student’s assets (cash, savings, trusts, and other investments) 
즉, 부모님의 수입과 재산, 가족의 숫자, 대학에 다니는 학생의 숫자, 그리고 학생의 수입과 재산에 근거하여 계산 한다.

위의 COA에서 가정 분담금 EFC를 빼면 그 학생이 그 대학을 다니기 위하여서는 필요한 자금의 규모, 즉 NEED(Student’s Financial Need)가 결정 된다.
